Dreispitz is currently changing it's appearance every day. The former purely industrial warehouse district is now hosting art galleries, exhibitions and museums. The newest addition to the hip crowd in Dreispitz is the restaurant Schmatz, run by Baselcitystudios, a company known for multimedia and music productions and events. As we know catering can be an important factor for the choice of a music studio, when many artists follow special diets and recording schedules can be gruesome. So it makes sense that Baselcitystudios is expaning also into restauration and catering. The next logical step would be high class accomodation to host a full state of the art service for musicians and artists using the studio facilities.

I did not have the opportunity to taste the food yet, but the bar area looked fab, just as the indoors and outdoors facilities. The bar is well stocked and the weekly menu can be read online on the website of baselcitystudios. I simply loved the quiet green elevated terrace which is a nice counterpoint to the grey and noisy outdoors around it.

It is a pity that the restaurant is only open over noon during the week and will therefore mainly be frequented by the people working at the galleries, RadioX and Baselcitystudios. It would be lovely if it were open for the people who go to the exhibitions, to the Shift festival or other art venues in Dreispitz.

The whole restaurant can be rented for events. Catering is provided by baselcitystudios.

A perfect Bagel....

It will certainly affect your cholesterol level and your weight for the worst, but will also make you joyous with bliss over the perfection of its form and taste: the Club Bagel from Blueberry at the Basel SBB train station.

The Bagel consists of a toasted maize bun glazed with sunflower oil and sprinkled with roasted sunflower seeds, it is filled with a chicken/mayo whip, salad, tomato, a whole poached egg and bacon. It stands about 10cm tall when filled and is a hearty meal if you're travelling or just camping out in the living room... :)

Delicious tea, fine soaps and many wonderous things

A wonderful little store called "Ianne & Ienne" has opened at the upper end of Güterstrasse at No 245 opposite the Post Office. Ianne and Ienne is a concept boutique which offers fin-de-siècle style knickknacks, jewellery, soaps, linen but primarily in the colors tea, lilac, rose and white, silver household items and tea (as shown in the picture 1)

When I went to the store I could not help but go on a shopping binge, as they offer a wide variety of delicious teas of the famed Kusmi brand. Kusmi is Russian but based in Paris and they offer high quality flavoured green teas, black teas and herbals packed in very decorative boxes.

Bewitchingly excellent food at Häxestübli

If you are familiar with the culinary landscape in Basel you have certainly come across the magical Häxehüsli-Skewer-Restaurant in Reinach, which is situated in the forest, decorated with all sorts of witches and has a magically decorated garden. Now the famous Häxehüsli (witch's house) has a opened a second restaurant called Häxestübli (witch's lounge) at the heart of Gundeli at Delsbergerallee crossing Dornacherstrasse, where the old Delsbergerhof Restaurant used to be.

The most particular thing about both restaurants is that they offer a wide variety of skewers and just that. But you can select among various types of meat-skewers, fish- and seafood-skewers and also veggie-skewers and side dishes. The plates are big and the prices are on the upper scale, but it's worth the money.

Finally some real coffehouse culture in Gundeli with the opening of "Nasobem"

on Saturday 19. September!

On the opening day you can start off with a bohemian breakfast: free croissants! During the day there will be music and books galore... In the evening at 19h30 you can enjoy a reading of Guy Krneta.

Besides good coffee and free WLAN, Nasobem also offers a wide variety of English and German books.

Elegant Country Style Dining at "Schaellenursli"

Since a thousand years the Church of St. Margarethen towers above the city in Binningen. Attached to the church is a farm managed by Urs and Christa Rediger.

With the help of the Acqua team they have now transformed one of their farm barns into a fine dining experience called "Schaellenursli" where you can enjoy local farm grown food and long forgotten rural specialties.

On Thursday to Sunday night you can choose among two menues, one of them vegetarian. The menues are in the middle price range with a four course meal costing about 50 CHF without beverages.

On Sunday morning you can enjoy a farmers brunch.

As the tables are highly booked early reservations are mandatory, especially for Saturday nights.

Soon to happen near Gundeli... at the Markthalle: Basel City Beach

The Event Agency First Soirée Basel will open the first Indoor Beach in Basel in the Markthalle on January 9, 2009.

The beach will of course feature white quartz sand, swimming pools, whirlpools, lounge and bar areas to get that summer feeling - in Winter! Judging that this winter is going to be exceptionally cold, this new venue will certainly be the hippest place to be this winter.

The Grand Opening will be on January 10th at 12 noon.

Yummy Monday Chicken...

Every Monday the smell of fresh roasted chicken lures the people in Gundel to the rear entrance of the Basel SBB station, where a guy sells freshly roasted "Poulet". It's the best in town! One chicken costs about 14 Francs, but they are raised animal-friendly and the taste is worth the price. The chicken stand is there from midday until about 1930 in the evening. If you need side dishes, you can either buy them at the train station Coop or near Tellplatz at one of the smaller shops (Tutti Frutti has ready to eat, freshly prepared side dishes).

Japanese Take-Away restaurant Wasabi at Güterstrasse 138 is now open also in the evenings serving fresh Sushi!

Sushi master Shingo Fujikake has expanded the regular lunch O-bento menu with a delicious range of sashimi and sushi. Prices are regular for sushi.

If you don't know Wasabi yet, check out their lunch offerings which differ according to week day (Fridays is sushi for lunch).

Sicilian Brunch at Caffè Fortuna

Caffè Fortuna is a sicilian themed restaurant at Güterstrasse which has opened a month ago. It offers a nice Sunday brunch for 25 Francs including Prosecco and Latte di Mandorla. Latte di Mandorla is almond milk, a southern italian speciality which is served as semi-freddo (almost frozen) and can then be eaten with a brioche.

The restaurant design of Caffè Fortuna has some Italian chic mixed with Swiss coziness. If its a sunny and warm day you can also sit outside in the garden, which is one of the prettiest restaurant gardens in Gundeli.

If you are not out for a Sunday brunch, test their lunch menues which offer a good price for an excellent meal.

As a surplus they also have a wide variety of boutique products, toys, office supplies, pet supplies etc. This also makes your party planning easier: just order all you need two days ahead and everything will be delivered early evening to your door.

If you want to opt for Coop products, you can go to http://www.coop.ch and visit their online store. Coop has another very customer friendly feature: you can select the delivery time, which is any time during the day up to 22h00 in the evening.

After a long time again a posting in the Gundeliblog! Honestly there haven't been any exciting openings in Gundeli lately, but what is going on is the refurbishment of Güterstrasse which is ripped open and changed into a pedestrian friendly boulevard. If you peep into the gaping holes where the drainage pipes are being replaced you will notice that some of the old piping is still from 1900. Isn't that amazing?

Soon at Dreispitz Migros will open up their Christmas wonderland where you can find baubles and christmas trees. Don't miss it!

Eating Dinner on a Monday night

If you ever wanted to grab some dinner on a Monday night, you might have noticed that this is nearly impossible in Switzerland. Many restaurants are closed Sundays and/or Mondays.

A wonderful exception in Gundeli which is also not too pricey is the Thiersteinerhof at Thiersteinerallee. Food prices are in the range of a Pizza Delivery service plus setting (around 18 CHF for a Pizza and 20 Francs for Pasta, Meat for about 30 Francs). The food is delicious, the restaurant has outdoor seating and is quite neat and tidy.

The restaurant is held by Antonio Germano who worked for the fabulous Restaurant Rösslirytti earlier. You can certainly taste that!

Finally! My dreams have come true! Basel finally has a Spa which deserves its name. The City Spa with its Butterfly logo can be found at Brunngässlein 3 (near the Armani Store opposite DKNY at Aeschenvorstadt).

City Spa offers a wide range of treatments and massages for men and women which are at par with premium wellness resorts in India and Thailand. The reception is warm and inviting with a cozy seating area, bar and children area! The predominant colors are red and orange. The light and sound are dimmed downstairs at the treatment area, where only the sound of a little fountain and light music can be heard.

Body pampering: several packages from Bali, Java, Thailand, Brazil offer relaxation and revitalization. Besides that City Spa also offers Rassoul treatments and Thalasso therapy.

Beauty: waxing (also with sugar and lime, oriental style). Teenagers pay half the price on Wednesdays!

Yee, I am back from my vacation in Ibiza! I was actually expecting it to be cool and autumny in Basel, but hey, it's just as warm as in Ibiza, only the sea and the pool are missing.

Adapting back to Gundeli is quite tricky, most of all when I compare the grocery prices and the quality of grocery goods (three times the prices for half the quality). But enough ranting about, after all Gundeli is great and I am glad to be back home.

What has changed in this week in Gundeli? Not much. The Cat Shelter of Basel had their open door event on August 26th. I had been there a day ahead to buy cool stuff for my cats. If you need a furry companion of any size, check out their residents.

Bonvivant at Zwingerstrasse in Basel

Remember my mysterious post about the great new restaurant I was not allowed to comment on yet? Well, now I can - after I had a tour of the premises. Bonvivant is the new and highly innovative project of the Gault Millau and Michelin decorated cook Andreas Schürmann.

The restaurant offers only one menu for lunch and one for the evening, prepared with excellent market-fresh ingredients and high quality cooking. The interiors of Bonvivant are warm, wooden and state-of-the-art, with long wooden tables to sit on. The kitchen is open, so that all kitchen wizardry can be observed by the guests.

The atmosphere of Bonvivant in general is more like eating at a (stylish) friend's house...

Prices are quite moderate with a two course lunch costing 35 CHF and a three course dinner costing 65 CHF. Alternately meat, fish and vegetarian menues are served according to the plan below:

monday - meat
tuesday - fish or seafood
wednesday - vegetarian or meat
thursday - meat
friday - fish or seafood

Bonvivant also offers catering for parties, events or dinner at home. Many of the used delicacies can also be bought directly at Bonvivant, such as wines, aprons, condiments and jams.

Best Japanese Food in Basel

Tired of Sushi? Wasabi at Güterstrasse 138 offers three excellent Japanese set menus every work day during lunchtime, prices ranging from CHF 11 to CHF 15.

Examples of Menus:
- Teriyaki Chicken (delicious!) with rice, spiced carrots and a very yummy cucumber-noodle salad
- Beef Eggplant curry with rice
- Vegetable Tempura with rice
- Yellow chicken curry with rice, spiced carrots and a very yummy cucumber-noodle salad

But beware: the food at Wasabi is extremely popular and people will be queuing already before opening of the shop to get their menus, if you arrive at 13h00 most will be sold out already. Wasabi is open from Monday to Friday from 11h30 to 13h30.

Sorry for the delay in postings, I had some medical procedures which required me to fast, and if I fast, my ability to do anything is reduced to random tantrums about being hungry.

Still, there are better news from Gundeli to tell: A new park called Falkensteinerpark is being built at the corner of Dornacher-, Gilgenberger-, Arlesheimer- and Falkensteinerstrasse at the construction site of the new big residential building complex.

Shhhhhh.... big secret... a new restaurant has opened, but LordYo has asked me not to write a review before we have actually tried it out which is going to happen by the end of this week. Hint: it is in a factory building where dance classes are held, has an open very stylish cuisine and the ingredients of the meals can be bought there also. Can't wait to go there, definately the hottest place in Gundeli at the moment, but still a secret...

1. August Festivities

Hooray, next week is National Day! On July 31, there'll be the big fireworks over the Rhein and on August 1, the official National Day festivities by the Government of Basel. These take place at the Water Tower (Wasserturm) on the Bruderholz (Bus No. 37 or Tram No. 16 and then walk). So if you don't have any plans for August 1 and can't get enough of Fireworks, that's the place to go. If you have a balcony or a terrace pointing to Bruderholz, get yourself a Margarita and enjoy the fireworks at home (they usually start at about 22h00/23h00)

Short tip for Novartis people who work or have meetings in Peter Merian...

Due to the construction work in Basel city centre it's really difficult to commute between Peter Merian House and St. Johann. Number 11 - the direct connection - takes up to half an hour and counting the way door to door it can amount to 40 Min...

But there is an alternative: From Peter Merian House walk to the train station (4 Min.) and take Bus No 30 (Bus stop is in front of Tschibo store / Confiserie Bachmann) to Johanniterbrücke (9 Min.), there change to No 11 to Voltaplatz (4 Min.), if you're lucky you'll be considerably faster than with the 11 or 1 tram.

A few years ago a Senior Manager at UBS had to retire early. Instead of golfing for the rest of his lifetime he decided to invest the money in the future: in young people. The Job Factory Store is strongly profit oriented, but only employs unemployed youth who did not find an apprenticeship position. Job Factory Store is great!

On the ground floor you have a café, a florist, a hairdresser and a great giftshop where you'll find the most trendy stuff from all over the world. In the basement there's the music store, where you can buy great electric guitars, ranging from Squire to Fender/Gibson, but also custom-made Zions (like mine!) can be found there. The guitarists who sell the guitars also give lessons and really know their stuff, without seeming arrogant.

On the first floor of Job Factory Store you'll find clothes of various brands. The top floor offers a good restaurant during lunchtime and different evening programmes. Job Factory Store also employs youth in different other non-retail areas. Find out more

Gundeli Pet Paradise!

Many of us probably have a pet at home, some of us may have cats... I have three moggies and I am glad that Gundeli offers a wide range of Pet Services in close proximity.

PET SHOPS

In Gundeli there are actually (at least) 4 Pet Shops where you can buy everything for your animal friend.

Small Pet Shop "Zum Goldfisch" at Güterstrasse 199 (Tellplatz) specializes in Reptiles and Rodents, but you can also find all neccessities for Cats and Dogs there, as well as Canary Birds, Hamsters and Gerbils.
Zoo Bahnhof of the Qualipet chain at the train station passage (where Interdiscount, FCB Fanstore and the Tamil shops are) is a very big pet store. You can not only get pet supply of all price ranges there, but also can buy all sorts of animals ranging from many sorts of parrots to stingrays (which are only for show and not for sale!). In Switzerland it's prohibited by law to sell dogs and cats in shops, so please don't expect to find a cardboard box with kittens in the back room.
Goldenway Cat & Dog Store at Reinacherstrasse 123 targets primarily owners of Dogs and Cats, so if you want to buy a real big bone or organic breakfast flakes for your doggie, that's the place to go.
Finally we have Fressnapf (attn. very annoying sounds on website...) also a big chain of Pet Supply Stores, which can be found at Dornacherstrasse 393. They got everything for Cats and Dogs, though their variety for rodents, birds and reptiles is not as impressive as Zoo Bahnhof.

VETERINARIAN

If your moggie, your turtle or your puppy are sick, you can go to Dres. Vögtli & Eugster at Pfeffingerstrasse 41. Great Vets, great practice, also open in some evenings and on Saturdays.

HOLIDAYS

If you're off to holidays and need a place to stay for your cats I can recommend the CatShelter and Holiday home at Schillerstrasse 30. A beautiful old art nouveau building, completely refurbished for the needs of pampered cats, two big rooms for holiday cats with secure outdoor facilities. Dr. Vögtli is the doctor on call, several animal keepers with a diploma in animal keeping tend to the cats during the day.

WHERE TO GET A CAT OR A DOG

You want a pet that you can't get in the common pet store and we're not talking Comodo Varans, but dogs and cats?
Cats: You can go to the local Animal Shelter or to the above mentioned Cat Shelter to get a cat. The fee for a cat is 200 Francs. Most of the cats are used to go outdoors and not suitable to live in closed apartments. If there are indoors cats, they are rare and sought after. Indoor cats will only be given out as a pair or if you already have a resident cat.
Dogs: You can go to the Basel Animal shelter who have many dogs waiting for a new home. Keep in mind that dogs need to pay dog tax, tram fees and that dog waste needs to be picked up! If you work all day, keeping a dog is not suitable (not even a teenie-tiny teacup Chihuahua... sob...well, I have a soft spot for tiny or very big dogs)
If you want to get a purebred cat or dog you'll find many breeders on the internet

TIP: You love dogs, but don't have time to keep a dog permanently? Go to the Basel Pet Shelter and borrow a dog for a walk on a Saturday or weekday afternoon! Almost as good as having an own dog!

Please be considerate when buying a pet that it's a living being, which needs a lot of attention and time and also money. It is sad to see that especially now during the holiday season many pet shelters are overcrowded with unwanted cats and dogs which were "abandoned". Also spay and neuter your pet, as it is much more humane than drowning unwanted puppies or kittens.

Getting Odd Jobs done...

You are an expat and need to move from one apartment to the other? You are not a millionaire? There are certain charities and brockenstuben which provide odd jobbers.

I made some great experiences with the guys of Remar at Dornacherstrasse who helped me move house, discarded all my old furniture and trash and also helped with Odd jobs such as putting together a very heavy table and fixing lamps. Remar is a christian relief foundation offering jobs to people who have been rehabilitated after drug abuse problems. The guys who helped me spoke English fluently (one bloke was actually a Maltese) and their fees are moderate.

Otherwise we also have Transform again, who offer a wide variety of services ranging from the before mentioned Laundry service to Office work, Garden work, Small repairs/painting, Party Catering etc.

Dry Cleaners in Gundeli

All this crinkled summer suits... It's time again to dry clean summer business wear, the duvet or winter wear... Gundeli offers quite a range of Dry cleaners, here's my review:

Our favourite tailor Torun (Tellplatz, opposite the 16 Tram stop direction City) got my white fine cotton dresses with the horrible red wine stains snow white again. Other drycleaners had failed miserably with this taks or claimed it to be impossible... I owe him so much!!! It's cleaned within a week at reasonable pricing. Advantage: If you want something altered and cleaned it can be done in one.
Drynette is a big provider dry cleaning services. Novartis has a contract with them, so if you happen to work at Peter Merian you can take your clothes to the office, put them in the Drynette pick-up spot at Peter Merian and pick them up a week later. If you don't work for Novartis or prefer to have them pick up your shirts at home, go to Dornacherstrasse 71 where their Gundeli office is and ask for details.
Worth trying out: Gundeldinger Feld has a small company called Transform (yes, the guys with the lunch cantina with the yummy cakes!) who not only do laundry for hotels, but also for private people. So if you want to outsource all your laundry, that might be an option, though I don't know their pricing.
Dry Cleaner Näf at Güterstrasse-Corner-Jurastrasse takes up to 14 days to clean, which is rather problematic if you need the dress fixed before your next trip.

Culinary attractions and the experience of being blind in Gundeldingerfeld

At the crossing of Dornacherstrasse / Bruderholzstrasse you'll find the former factory Gundeldingerfeld which today hosts a wide range of Restaurants and small companies. Here the best in Gundeldingerfeld... (feel free to add recommendations).

EO IPSO

The EoIpso is a lounge / restaurant in a former factory hall. The food at the restaurant is exquisite and at the upper price range, the lounge is cozy and offers outdoor seating. If you're there try their non-alcoholic Cocktails, which are pure Vitamin doping.

BLINDE KUH

If you're afraid of the dark, this is NOT the place to go. Blinde Kuh is a restaurant where you dine in absolute darkness and experience being blind for an evening. It really is pitch dark and without your personal waiter who attends you during the evening you're lost. The waiters of that restaurant are all blind and will guide you through the evening with the different excellent and reasonably priced courses and funny tasting games.

MüKDAM

Too tired to cook? You'll find a wide range of Thai food at Mükdam, the restaurant of the Basel Backpacker's in Gundeldingerfeld (at the end of Gundeldingerfeld). Menus cost around 14 CHF and the yellow curry with pineapple RULEZ!

A Perfect Saturday in Gundeli at Güterstrasse

The perfect Saturday starts with breakfast at Café Del Mundo at Güterstrasse 158 (find an article from Annabelle about Del Mundo here). Me and LordYo, my sweetheart can be found there almost every Saturday morning. Saturdays they have a wonderful brunch with the perfect croissants and very yummy Birchermuesli! It's always crowded so be there early to reserve a seat or be ready to wait.

After breakfast you can go to Tarzan, the trendy clothes store which is right opposite of Del Mundo at Güterstrasse 145 to buy some cool T-Shirts or Hoodies. Great design, fun to wear! They also have cool Pixelart posters, if you want to hang something cool in your office.

If you want to buy the IPod fitting your Aqua blue Tarzan hoodie, you can go to Ingeno, the Apple store at Güterstrasse 133 or to MediaMarkt at the rear end of the SBB Train station, which is only a few steps away from Ingeno. Ingeno also has state of the art Apple stuff, so if you want to see real good product design, go there! You can also find trendy laptop bags and backpacks there!

Too fat to fit into the S size Tarzan hoodie? Viva Training at Güterstrasse offers a new approach to fitness for those ladies tired of overcrowded gyms and gawking Arnolds. Viva Training has a holistic approach which includes 3 times weekly 30 Min. training at special facilities designed for the female build (plus optional 30 Min Hypoxi-Training) plus Cooking Shows where you can learn to cook healthy. The training machines are in a circle around an illuminated cube on the ceiling, which shows you (red/green) when you have to start at a machine and when to stop. In between the sessions at the training facilities you jump on a trampolin! I train at Viva and I really like it, the atmosphere is relaxed and it is great fun to work out there.

Need a massage after your training at Viva? If they say that nothing's for free, that's wrong. Migun offers free massages on their massaging machines at Güterstrasse 138. I wish my employer would buy one of these machines... so, don't get scared by the machine and the cyberbuddhist monastery like incense-filled ambiance, it works!

Now that your body is toned and pampered, what about some soothing of the soul? Check out the Esoteric store Mineral Island at Güterstrasse 141, where you'll find many semiprecious stones with magical healing powers... If you want more down to earth wellbeing, why not go to the hairdressers? Walk all the way up Güterstrasse until Number 201 at Tellplatz and check in at MiniPrix Coiffure Hair Salon. A cut only costs 20 Francs (coloration is also 20 Francs) and the young and trendy hairdressers are great and very upbeat. As MiniPrix does not take reservations, you'll have to wait for your turn like in a classic barbershop, but the diverse waiting crowd reduces the waiting time considerably.

So much for the beauty outside. If you want to eat healthy step in next door to the Organic Food Shop Vitalis at Güterstrasse 201 and buy some healthy stuff for lunch, as the morning is over!

The Gundeli Area of Basel is situated at the south of Basel city in the Grossbasel area. Core spots in Gundeli are the Güterstrasse which is at the rear end of Basel SBB main railway station, Dreispitz with its malls and the area of the St. Margarethen Park with its historic St. Margarethen church.

Here some short historical details about Gundeli...

Basel Train Station
The Basel train station was built in the 1860s and expanded in the 1880s. It gained historical importance during World War II when thousands of Jewish refugees from Germany found safe harbour by entering Switzerland through the train station. The area at the rear end of the train station which today is the entry point to Gundeli was actually bombed during World War II. It was the only bomb to ever hit Switzerland during World War II and it was the Americans who mistakenly dropped it. Oops. Luckily the only casualty was an elderly lady who had a heart attack, but several buildings were destroyed through fires. Want to check it out? Go to Hochstrasse, walk to the end and you'll see a ruin commemorating the bombing. It's a playground which currently is being refurbished by a team of children and the city authorities.

Güterstrasse
Güterstrasse means Street of Goods, and it was basically a transportation way for the last 100 years taking goods from the former horse stables and warehouse district Dreispitz to center town. If you go to the Dreispitz entry at Leimgrubenweg Bus stop you can still see the old horse stables. Today Güterstrasse has many trendy shops and is the lifeline for people living in Gundeli and neighbouring hillside area Bruderholz. Currently there is a project going on to refurbish Güterstrasse into a Boulevard (more about the project here). I bet this will attract even more cool stores and Cafés.

St. Margarethenpark
The big park at the south end of Gundeli stretches from the Basel Ice Skating Rink to the Church of St. Margarethen. On top of the Park hill, in the suburban town of Binningen already, the Astronomical Observatorium and the Sonnenbad can be found. The church of St. Margarethen was built during the crusades by a tired nun who didn't make it home after returning from the holy land. Thus the church is over 1000 years old. She and 3 other nuns dwelled here in the area, creating a church and thereafter monasteries on St. Margareth Hill and the neighboring hills. The story can be read in front of the church on a commemorative plate.

Most of the Gundeli area used to belong to a German insurance company called Mainzer Versicherungsgesellschaft who built houses here in the 1880s. Therefore it was discussed to call the area "Mainzer Quartier", still during those nationalistic times giving a swiss district a german name was not welcomed, so instead it was called after the Castle of Gundeldingen. Earlier reportedly 7 castles were in Gundeli, but hell, I haven't seen one of them, though according to local historians four of them still stand.... I suppose one of them is the nice building at Tellplatz. But the other 3, who knows...
